Editorial
Interbio constitutes a science- and business cluster in the field of biology and health which operates in the framework of the European Interreg IV B Sudoe programme. Founding members are from South West of France, Portugal and Spain. Having been operational for more than one year, the project has already demonstrated its ability to foster trans-national interdisciplinary research and to create a network of technology platforms and advanced instrumentation. It has also initiated a process of analysis of best practices in the area of technology transfer.
In 2010, a comparative study based on 25 indicators has been carried out to evaluate the innovation performances of European countries in the field of biotechnologies. Such a study indicates that Northern countries, in particular Germany, Finland, Denmark and Sweden, are more efficient than Southern ones. In an increasingly competitive environment, Interbio provides a unique opportunity to join forces and to develop initiatives that may provide South-West European countries with a leading edge in the world of knowledge and technology transfer. The international Interbio Symposium 'Frontiers in Protein Research' will take place at the Instituto de Tecnologia Quimica e Biologica (ITQB) from 5-7 May 2011. In the unique setting of the town of Oeiras, located at the Tagus river mouth and the Estoril beach coast, just outside Lisbon, this meeting will cover recent progresses in different areas of protein research. Gathering mainly experts working within one of the nodes of the Interbio network, this 3-days symposium is organised in five thematic sections whose broad coverage will highlight the unique challenges of the protein world in biological sciences, biomedicine and technological applications. The Young Scientist Symposium is an event organized by young researchers for young researchers. Since it was created in 2008 by PhD students and post-doctoral fellows from the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology (IECB), the Young Scientist Symposium has pursued 3 main goals:
- To give to young chemists, biologists and physicians the opportunity to present their work through oral presentations and posters;
- To encourage interdisciplinary interactions, so as to facilitate collaborative research and technology transfer;
- To inform young researchers about the different career pathways available to them, with 3 PhD graduates invited to speak about their career in academia, industry and the institutional... Read more...
From the 26th to the 30th of June 2011, 3 Interbio events will take place at the Institut Europeen de Chimie et Biologie (IECB):
- A scientific conference: Rethinking Targets for Therapeutic Intervention - June 26th-28th
- A technical workshop: Microfluidics, from Single Molecule to Cell Biology - June 29th
- A scientific workshop: The Bordeaux RNA Club Meeting - June 30th
Those three events are targeted to students, researchers and engineers from the academia and the industry with an interest in biotechnologies and life sciences. Registered Interbio members are invited to participate in those events and can get financial support to cover their mobility costs... Read more...
